Whittier exists because the U.S. Army wanted a port that clouds could hide.
Chosen in 1941 for its persistent overcast and deep ice-free water, the site was linked to the interior by a 4,110-metre tunnel bored straight through Maynard Mountain, still the longest highway tunnel in North America and still shared, one direction at a time, between cars and freight trains.

Twenty-five years later the Exxon Valdez grounded on Bligh Reef.
